Performance Groups

Perform together. Connect with the community.

For dancers who cannot get enough of performing, En Avant Performance Groups provide additional opportunities to take the stage, work as part of a team, and represent our studio throughout the community.

Dancers learn specialty routines in a selected style, rehearse together each week, and perform at a few specially selected community events during the season.

Performance Groups are designed to offer a meaningful step beyond regular classes without requiring the travel, expense, or individualized commitment of competitive dance.

More Opportunities to Perform

Weekly classes, the winter showcase, and the spring recital give dancers important opportunities to learn and perform. Performance Groups add a different kind of experience: taking polished choreography beyond the studio stage and sharing it at community celebrations, festivals, parades, and other local events.

Through the experience, dancers develop:

– Confidence and performance quality
– Teamwork and stage awareness
– Experience maintaining choreography over time
– Responsibility to a group
– Pride in representing En Avant
– Friendships built through shared commitment

What does the season include?

Weekly group rehearsals

Each Performance Group rehearses once per week during the regular dance season. Rehearsals focus on learning choreography, cleaning formations, building performance quality, and preparing for upcoming events.

Community performances

Each group typically participates in two to three pre-selected events during the season. Opportunities may include fall festivals, holiday celebrations, parades, arts events, and other community performances.

Additional optional opportunities may occasionally be offered when an appropriate event becomes available.

A deliberately manageable schedule

We know dancers and their families already have full schedules. The program is intentionally designed around a limited number of meaningful events rather than frequent weekend travel.

Performance Group routines are not included in En Avant’s spring recital. This allows dancers to focus on their regular class routines and minimize costs for families while still receiving additional performance opportunities elsewhere.

Performance Group styles

Current Performance Group styles may include:

Jazz

Energetic choreography with an emphasis on musicality, precision, confidence, and stage presence.

Hip Hop

Performance-focused choreography emphasizing rhythm, dynamics, individuality, and teamwork.

Contemporary

Expressive movement that helps dancers develop artistry, storytelling, musical connection, and ensemble awareness.

Tap

Rhythmic choreography that challenges dancers to perform clearly, confidently, and cohesively as a group.

Style offerings may vary by season according to dancer interest, placement, instructor availability, and the number of dancers needed to form a successful group.

Is a Performance Group right for my dancer?

This program may be a good fit for a dancer who:

– Loves performing and wants more opportunities
– Enjoys being part of a team
– Is ready for an additional weekly commitment
– Can attend rehearsals and scheduled events consistently
– Is willing to practice outside of rehearsal
– Responds positively to corrections
– Encourages and supports other dancers
– Is excited to represent En Avant in the community

Dancers do not need to be the most advanced in their class to be considered. Effort, focus, coachability, performance quality, confidence, and team attitude are all important parts of placement.

Technique classes remain the foundation

A Performance Group is an additional performing opportunity – not a replacement for regular dance training.

Dancers must remain consistently enrolled in the regular technique class that supports their Performance Group style. Weekly classes are where dancers continue developing the technique, strength, vocabulary, musicality, and versatility needed to perform their group choreography successfully.

Commitment and tuition

Monthly tuition

Performance Group tuition is $60 per month, per dancer, per group.

This fee is billed separately from regular-class tuition and covers:

– Weekly rehearsal
– Choreography and instruction
– Performance preparation
– Event planning and coordination
– Staff supervision at scheduled performances

A dancer placed in more than one group is enrolled and billed separately for each group.

Any required performance attire, shoes, accessories, or event-specific expenses will be communicated before the start of the season.

Attendance

Because choreography and formations depend on every dancer, consistent attendance is especially important.

Dancers are expected to:

– Attend weekly rehearsals
– Arrive on time and prepared
– Participate with enthusiasm in scheduled performances
– Practice choreography outside of rehearsal
– Communicate unavoidable conflicts promptly
– Represent En Avant with kindness, maturity, and respect

Auditions and placement

Performance Groups are formed through an audition and placement process.

Dancers are evaluated according to their current age and level. Placement considerations include:
– Effort and focus

– Coachability
– Technique appropriate for the dancer’s level
– Performance quality
– Confidence
– Team attitude
– Group balance and program needs

Auditioning does not guarantee placement, and not every style will necessarily run each season. Each group requires enough appropriately placed dancers to create a positive and successful team experience.

Placement in more than one Performance Group may be offered when it is appropriate for the dancer and workable within the schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Are Performance Groups competitive?

No. These groups focus on community performance rather than scores, rankings, or adjudication.

Are they only for advanced dancers?

No. Placement is based on age, level, readiness, and group needs. Dancers are evaluated according to what is appropriate for their current stage of training.

Can my dancer participate in more than one group?

Possibly. Dancers may be considered for multiple styles when their training, readiness, and schedule support the added commitment.

Can a new En Avant dancer audition?

Regular En Avant classes provide the training foundation for Performance Groups. Families who are new to the studio should begin by scheduling a trial class so we can learn more about the dancer and recommend an appropriate placement.
